IPTV services are becoming an increasingly popular alternative for consumers looking to access live TV channels and streaming content over the internet. Among the latest options available in India is JioTV, which promises a large selection of live TV channels, OTT content, and a more affordable entertainment experience.
In this review, we’ll take a closer look at JioTV’s ₹200 plan to see whether it delivers good value for money. We’ll explore what the plan includes, the channels and features you can expect, how the streaming experience compares to traditional TV services, and where the service falls short. By the end of this review, you’ll have a clear idea of whether JioTV’s ₹200 plan is the right choice for your entertainment needs.
Note: Jio recently launched a ₹55 plan that provides access exclusively to JioTV, allowing you to watch its premium live TV channels. Compared to the ₹200 plan, the ₹55 plan is a better option if you’re solely looking to watch live TV channels. However, keep in mind that it is limited to mobile devices and tablets.
Recent Updates
18/07/26: Added a note section mentioning Jio’s new ₹55 plan, which offers affordable access to JioTV IPTV services on mobile devices. Also updated the Final Thoughts section to reflect this new option.
TL;DR
- JioTV’s ₹200 monthly plan offers excellent value for money, providing access to over 800 live TV channels, multiple OTT subscriptions, YouTube Premium, and 30GB of data.
- If you primarily watch content on your smartphone or tablet, it’s one of the best entertainment deals currently available.
- However, the service has a major drawback: standalone JioTV subscribers cannot easily watch live TV on smart TVs, as the JioTV+ app is largely restricted to JioFiber and AirFiber customers.
- Additionally, several OTT benefits are mobile-only, reducing their value for users who prefer watching on larger screens.
- Overall, JioTV’s ₹200 plan is an excellent budget-friendly IPTV option for mobile users, but TV-first viewers may find the current limitations frustrating.
- If Jio eventually improves smart TV support, this could become one of the most compelling IPTV services available in India.
A. What’s Included in the ₹200 JioTV Plan?
Before diving into the plan itself, it’s important to note that you’ll need a Jio SIM card to sign in and use the JioTV application. Without a Jio number, you won’t be able to access the service.
• Monthly price:
As for pricing, the plan is advertised at ₹200 for 28 days. Since there are 13 billing cycles in a year, the effective monthly cost works out to approximately ₹216.67 per month.
It’s also worth noting that the ₹200 plan is technically a data-only add-on plan. It includes 30GB of high-speed 4G/5G data. However, if you already have an active Jio mobile plan, you’ll also be eligible for Unlimited 5G benefits.
• Included OTT apps and subscriptions:
Now let’s talk about the main attraction: the content. The plan includes access to 15 OTT platforms, with some of the most notable services being YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime Video, JioHotstar, Sony LIV, ZEE5, and Lionsgate Play.
On paper, this is a strong lineup that covers a wide range of movies, TV shows, sports, and premium content. That said, there are a few limitations and caveats regarding some of these subscriptions, which I’ll discuss later in the review.
• Number of TV channels:
Of course, most people considering an IPTV service aren’t subscribing primarily for OTT apps—they want live TV channels. This is where the ₹200 plan becomes particularly interesting.
JioTV claims to offer access to over 800 live TV channels, including channels from major broadcasters such as JioStar, Sony Entertainment Network, Warner Bros. Discovery, and others. In practical terms, you get access to a large portion of these broadcasters’ channel bouquets, covering entertainment, movies, sports, news, kids programming, and lifestyle content.
B. How Does JioTV Work?
JioTV is a standalone streaming application that gives users access to both OTT content and over 800 live TV channels through a single platform. In many ways, it functions as an IPTV service.
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Unlike traditional cable TV or DTH services that rely on physical infrastructure such as coaxial cables, satellite dishes, or technician installations, IPTV delivers television content over the internet. As long as you have a compatible device and a stable internet connection, you can access your TV channels and streaming content from virtually anywhere.
The JioTV service is available on a wide range of devices, including smartphones and tablets, as well as Android TV devices, Samsung Smart TVs running Tizen OS, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV devices (including the Fire TV Stick), and Jio’s own set-top box platform through the JioTV+ app.
However, while the service appears simple on the surface, there are a few requirements and platform-specific limitations that prospective users should be aware of. I’ll discuss those in more detail later in the Cons section.
C. My Experience Using JioTV
I was genuinely excited when I discovered JioTV’s ₹200 plan a few weeks ago. After comparing the costs of JioTV against traditional cable TV and DTH services, JioTV appeared to be the clear winner from a value-for-money perspective.
However, things didn’t go entirely as planned.
• When “TV” Doesn’t Work on a TV:
Soon after purchasing the plan, I discovered that I was effectively limited to watching live TV on my smartphone and tablet. Watching live TV on my television wasn’t an option, which came as a major disappointment.
Previously, Jio offered the JioTV+ application, which allowed JioFiber and AirFiber users to access live TV content on compatible smart TVs without necessarily using a Jio set-top box. Later, Jio introduced a separate application called Jio Live TV for its set-top box users. The expectation was that this dedicated live TV app would eventually become available on Android TV and other smart TV platforms as well.
Instead, Jio merged the live TV functionality into JioTV+, creating an unexpected problem.
Since JioTV+ is primarily designed for JioFiber and AirFiber customers, users subscribed to JioTV are effectively locked out of watching live TV through the app on Android TV. In my opinion, Jio should have maintained a dedicated JioTV application for Android TV and other TV operating systems. While I cannot fully verify it, this limitation also appears to affect platforms such as Samsung’s Tizen OS and Amazon Fire TV devices.
• App Experience:
Fortunately, aside from the TV limitation, my overall experience was fairly positive.
I was able to log into the bundled OTT services without much difficulty, and YouTube Premium worked exactly as expected. As for live TV, I had access to most of the major channels that the average household would watch, including SAB TV, Colors, Star Movies, Sony PIX, History TV18, Hungama, Disney Channel, and many others through the app. The only notable exception was with ZEE channels, which weren’t available through the live TV lineup. However, I was still able to watch them through the ZEE5 app using the included ZEE5 subscription.
The app itself isn’t perfect, though. Navigation occasionally feels sluggish, and the user interface lacks the polish found in more mature streaming platforms. In some ways, it reminds me of the early days of JioCinema. Hopefully, if Jio eventually launches a dedicated smart TV app—or expands access to JioTV+—the overall experience will become more refined.
• How it compares to cable TV/DTH?
Comparing JioTV directly with cable TV and DTH is somewhat difficult because I wasn’t able to use it on my TV. That said, the potential savings are significant.
I currently pay around ₹498 per month for cable TV. A comparable DTH package would cost me roughly ₹455 per month since regional channels are optional. With JioTV, I still have access to almost all of the channels I regularly watch, with the only notable exceptions being a few local and Goan news channels. This makes it a fairly practical alternative for my viewing needs.
From a live TV perspective alone, the ₹200 plan can reduce monthly costs by more than 50% compared to traditional cable TV.
• OTT benefits:
The OTT benefits are a different story.
While the plan includes access to popular services such as Prime Video and JioHotstar, many of these subscriptions are mobile-only plans. Since I primarily watch content on a television and generally dislike advertisements during streaming, I didn’t include these OTT benefits in my cost calculations.
However, for users who consume most of their content on smartphones or tablets, the bundled OTT subscriptions significantly improve the overall value proposition.
For TV-first viewers like me, though, JioTV should primarily be viewed as a low-cost IPTV service with OTT benefits as a bonus, rather than as a complete replacement for standalone OTT subscriptions.
D. Pros
Excellent Value for Money
The biggest advantage of JioTV’s ₹200 plan is undoubtedly its value. For an effective monthly cost of around ₹216.67, you get access to over 800 live TV channels, multiple OTT subscriptions, and additional mobile data benefits. Compared to traditional cable TV and DTH services, the savings can be substantial.
Extensive Live TV Channel Selection
JioTV offers access to channels from major broadcasters, including JioStar, Sony Entertainment Network, Warner Bros. Discovery, and others. This means most users will find all the popular entertainment, movie, sports, news, kids, and lifestyle channels they regularly watch.
Bundled OTT Subscriptions
The inclusion of OTT services such as YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime Video, JioHotstar, Sony LIV, ZEE5, and Lionsgate Play significantly increases the plan’s value. Even if some subscriptions come with limitations, having access to these services as part of a ₹200 plan is difficult to ignore.
Additional Mobile Data Benefits
Unlike traditional TV subscriptions, JioTV also includes 30GB of high-speed 4G/5G data. Users who already have an eligible Jio mobile plan can also take advantage of Unlimited 5G, making the package even more attractive.
No Installation or Technician Visits
Since JioTV is primarily app-based, there’s no need for dish installations, cable wiring, or technician visits. Simply subscribe, log in with your Jio number, and start watching on supported devices.
E. Cons
No Proper Smart TV Support for Non-JioFiber Users
The biggest drawback of JioTV’s ₹200 plan is the lack of proper smart TV support for users who are not subscribed to JioFiber or AirFiber.
While the JioTV+ app is available on various TV platforms, standalone JioTV subscribers cannot simply log in and start watching live TV. For a service that is effectively marketed as an IPTV platform, this restriction feels unnecessary and significantly reduces its appeal as a cable or DTH replacement.
Jio should either allow JioTV subscribers access to JioTV+ or launch a dedicated smart TV app for JioTV users.
Outdated and Unrefined User Experience
Although the mobile app is functional, the overall user experience feels dated. Navigation can be sluggish at times, and the app lacks the polish and responsiveness expected from a modern streaming service. Considering how long JioTV has been available, I expected a much more refined experience. A major redesign could go a long way toward making the service more appealing.
OTT Benefits Are Mostly Mobile-Focused
While the inclusion of multiple OTT subscriptions looks impressive on paper, many of these benefits are restricted to mobile viewing. This limits their usefulness for users who primarily watch content on televisions. Jio would greatly improve the value proposition by introducing a higher-tier plan that offers TV-compatible OTT subscriptions. I suspect many users would be willing to pay extra for a package that combines live TV channels with unrestricted OTT access on larger screens.
Some Channels Are Missing
Despite offering over 800 live TV channels, JioTV isn’t a complete replacement for every cable TV setup. However, I do think it has the potential to replace a traditional DTH connection for many users. In my case, aside from a few regional channels and local news stations, JioTV includes virtually all of the major channels I regularly watch. Whether those missing channels are a dealbreaker will depend on your viewing habits, but for most people, I think it’s a switch that’s well worth considering.
F. Final Verdict: Is JioTV’s ₹200 Plan Worth It?
The answer depends entirely on how you consume your content.
If you’re primarily a mobile or tablet user, then JioTV’s ₹200 plan is an easy recommendation. For an effective monthly cost of around ₹216.67, you get access to over 800 live TV channels, multiple OTT subscriptions, YouTube Premium, and additional mobile data benefits. When viewed purely from a value-for-money perspective, it’s one of the most compelling entertainment plans currently available.
But if your only goal is to watch live TV channels on a mobile device or tablet, the new ₹55 plan by Jio offers a far more affordable alternative. I’m still unclear whether this plan also works with the JioTV+ app on JioFiber and AirFiber set-top boxes. Still, if it does, it could become one of the most cost-effective alternatives to traditional DTH and cable TV for many households.
However, the recommendation becomes less straightforward for users who primarily watch content on a television. The inability to easily access live TV on smart TVs without being a JioFiber or AirFiber customer significantly limits the service’s usefulness as a complete replacement for cable TV or DTH. While the OTT benefits help soften the blow, many of those subscriptions are also geared toward mobile viewing rather than the big-screen experience that many households prefer.
That said, JioTV gets the fundamentals right. The channel lineup is extensive, the included OTT benefits add genuine value, and the potential cost savings compared to traditional TV services are substantial. In my case, switching from cable TV to JioTV could cut my monthly entertainment costs by more than half while still providing access to almost all the channels I regularly watch.
Ultimately, JioTV’s ₹200 plan feels like a service with enormous potential that is being held back by a few frustrating limitations. If Jio were to open smart TV access to standalone subscribers or introduce a dedicated TV app, this could easily become one of the best IPTV offerings available in India.
My Rating: 7/10
Recommended for: Mobile-first users, budget-conscious viewers, and anyone looking to reduce their cable or DTH expenses (mainly existing JioFiber/Airber users).
Not recommended for: Users who primarily watch live TV on a smart TV and are not subscribed to JioFiber or AirFiber.
